Suicide Prevention Training

MHACA delivers the Central Australia Suicide Prevention Training Program. The program delivers culturally appropriate training that develops awareness, knowledge and skills around strategies that reduce suicide in the community. The accredited training is delivered to government and non-government organisations, the general public, target communities and high-risk groups.
Please note: All accredited training is available free of charge to pension card holders, higher education & VET students and Centrelink recipients. For registration please email training@mhaca.org.au. Evidence of pension card or current student card required.

Accredited Workshops

ASIST

ASIST is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first-aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognise when someone may be at risk of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don’t need any formal training to attend the workshop—ASIST can be learned and used by anyone.

SafeTALK

safeTALK is a half-day alertness workshop that prepares anyone, regardless of experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. safeTALK-trained helpers can recognise these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving mental health support.

Standard Mental Health First Aid

This two-day course teaches adults how to provide initial support to adults who are developing a mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis. Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation. As a participant you will gain improved knowledge of mental illnesses and their interventions, knowledge of appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with a mental health problem.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

This two-day course was developed for adults to support young people aged 12-18, Youth Mental Health First Aid training teaches participants how to provide initial support to a young person who may be experiencing a mental health problem, or mental health crisis, until professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based Action Plan.

Training Courses for Service Providers Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders

 I-ASIST Alice Springs

Indigenous Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training I-ASIST provides a culturally relevant framework for participants to learn how to use a unique 6 task model to provide a suicide first aid intervention, work with someone to develop a personalised safety plan to keep safe for now and connect with further help. This course has been developed by First Nations people with First Nations facilitators, to provide culturally appropriate suicide prevention training.

SafeYARN

safeYARN is a suicide prevention program, designed to foster meaningful connections and open dialogues within Indigenous communities. This culturally grounded training emphasises:

  • Story-telling and Connection: using yarning in a safe space for participants to share experiences, build trust and create a supportive network.
  • Cultural Safety: tailored content respects local customs, values and traditions, making it relevant to the unique needs of each community.
  • Early Identification: equipping participants with practical skills to recognise warning signs and provide compassionate support to individuals with thoughts of suicide.

Youth Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid

In this informative and strengths-based two-day course you will learn how to assist Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander young people who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional support is received or the crisis resolves, using practical, evidence-based action plan. You will be grounded in social and emotional well-being from an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander perspective and explore strengths-based communication tips to engage Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander young people.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid (Adult)

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid course will teach you how to assist an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based Action Plan. This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of Aboriginal people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.

Free Mental Health Workshops

MHACA also delivers two short workshops – Mental Health in the Workplace and Observe Respond Support – Suicide Prevention Skills. Both workshops are free and can be delivered in person in Alice Springs or online via Zoom.
