We were very happy to have the ladies from the Akeyulerre Healing Centre visit yesterday, to celebrate the launch of a beautiful painting called “Watchful Eyes.”
“Watchful Eyes” was commissioned by MHACA to celebrate Mental Health Week in 2016, and sponsored by a grant from the Northern Territory Government Community Benefit Fund.
This painting was created by Margaret Turner, Patricia Webb, Michelle Williams, Lorraine Gorey and Patricia Drover with the support of other senior Arrernte ladies, and is about
“…watching over people with mental health issues, and making sure that they get looked after properly. Making sure that the families are there for them, and that they get the right professional help. Supporting people on their home lands and doing cultural activities. Get them sitting down on the ground out in the bush – to see the land.” M.K Turner
We think it’s a great way of celebrating how Aboriginal people take care of those who aren’t travelling well, and also the healing powers of being out bush and spending time with family.
We’re very proud to have this painting in our foyer, and to continue our friendship and partnership with Akeyulerre.
